This band was either way behind the times or way ahead of the times, but when they came out with this record in 1995 it didn't sound like anything else out there, really. Not metal, not industrial or dance, not "punk" in the musical sense, but certainly in the cultural sense. Sterling Ruby was the brainchild in the band, and their connection to skateboarding. Brutal stuff.

My friend Stimy wrote this song before I knew him, in 1988, while he was in Sub Society. We knew it as the Matt Hensley song... It was after I'd seen Stimy's next band, one of my all-time favorites, Inch, that I put 2+2 together and realized that he was the guy singing "A Whole Lot Less." Great song, great man, great soundtrack to Matt Hensley's skateboarding.

From "G Major" the self-released 7" from 1989 (I think) this is the first song from side 2. Hagop Najarian on guitar and vocals, Neil Blender on vocals and bass, Eddie Glass on drums.

Haven't added much lately, but Jake from Gift of Destiny sent me this cool track which he described as old punk/metal/garbage. Sounds rad to me! Good thing they didn't say old school. God I hate that term. The song is called CIA. Reminds me of something the almighty Butthole Surfers would've done in the late 80s. I like it. Great song -- I decided to put it up today after hearing the line "I hope ya get drafted, I hope you burn and die; you apolitical asshole, hope you're the first to fry. 'Cause you don't care what happens to me as long as it don't happen to you." I wish I was in New York during the Occupy Wall Street Protests, made me listen to a bunch of good protest music, though.

Void seems to be experiencing a revival in interest these days. It took me a long time to be able to appreciate the Faith/Void split, but I've been pretty into for the last 12 years or so. I lived with Rob Erickson in the late 90s and I think that was when I was listening to them a lot... They have an album that was recorded in 1983 that has never been released. Apparently the band still doesn't want it released. I have a few songs from that recording (I think) that are a little more metal but still ripping. The drummer died a few years back which is a bummer. If you like this check out the Faith Void split LP on Dischord.

Worked World used to break down some songs to the core section -- the most important section of the song, and Contribution has carried on the tradition. Here's a cool version recorded very live, with very little mixing, of The Jam's Down In The Tube Station At Midnight.

This song is so genius and so funny and awesome. The story behind it is great. This guy was on the news because someone tried to rape his sister, in the projects in Mississippi, I think. He was on the news, his persona is a catalyst for controversy, and some folks took his words from the news and used Auto-Tune to "songify" them, added a background track, and voila, a catchy song! And now the guys rolling in the dough, which is awesome, too. Something good came out of it, he moved his family out of the ghetto into a nice home. Awesome.
