There have been a million questions recently about some mystery group of skateboarders who are trying to take over the skateboarding world, led by that guy Gary from Woodward Camp, and they want skateboarding in the Olympics, right? Right, of course they do.

So despite the obvious questions which should dispel all the rumors, like, "What would anyone really do if they were actually somehow able to take over the skateboarding world?" and "How is a group of skateboarders really going to influence skateboarding to be in the Olympics?," they persist -- the rumors, that is. And the skateboarding media has, for the most part, ignored the issue, because, after all, something huge like skateboarding in the Olympics is waaay less important than team-hopping skateboarders. Actually, importance is in the eye of the beholder, and this is way less pleasant than the fun, funny gossip stuff, so i get that.

But the real problem, and the primary reason that the Olympic threat hasn't been properly explained, at least as I've seen it, is that it's so damn convoluted. It's hard to understand, and there are a lot of intricacies that all lend themselves to unpleasantness and conspiracy.
So I was pleased to read this article from Dave Carnie over at KingShit.org which puts everything in some pretty good perspective and actually explains it well.

It's going to happen, it's just a matter of when. Sad? Maybe. True? Definitely.

Danny Bearer, the first Skateboarding World Champion, died last night at age 59.

I'm old enough so that the magazines I first pawed through when I was a little kid were the SKateboarder Quarterly issues from the sixties that my older brother kept. Among these pages were Torger Johnson and Danny Bearer, and somewhere in there, or maybe in Surfer, I knew that he was a surfer too... Bearer was a ripping skater and a forefather to the main focus of my life... Sad to see him go. Here's an article about his passing.

Sean Cliver's Disposable book of skateboard graphics is a great book for anyone who is at all interested in skateboarding history, art, and culture. He's recently come out with a new, way more complete edition, boldly title "The Disposable Skateboard Bible." While I hesitate slightly about the name -- I'm not sure it's that complete -- I love the book. Yes, I'm one of those nostalgic skateboard geeks who constantly has to check himself about living today, not in the past. Here's a cool little interview with Mr. Cliver on his latest collection.

Chris Neirtako had a baby on September 11. Actually, his wife "had" the baby, Chris was only responsible for about 25% of the work.

Neiratko!

Chris called it way back when that September 11 was going to be the date, and on the 10th he gave her all sorts of spicy food. That induces labor, you know. Anyway, not longer afterwards he wrote this article on grass roots-style skateboarding contests for ESPN.com.

This may just be the next trend which will be lumped in with skateboarding.

Those boards have an extra wheel in the middle of the trucks that swivels, so when they're doing those spins like a snowboard, they're actually spinning on a caster-kind of thing. Not that there's really anything wrong with these things... it's just not skateboarding. Tetris? Couldn't they think of anything cooler?

Pretty damn cool that the San Francisco library would have Ruby Ray's photos on display, and add to that a whole slew of related displays and exhibits and it just doesn't seem like that could happen anywhere else in the world... at a public library. Los Angeles is too cool, New York is to busy, London wouldn't hear of it, they're still burying that whole Jubilee-ruining boat ride... and really, there's no place else with the history. If you're in SF, you've got to go see this.
